Two weeks ago, a woman in the south Chicago suburbs was charged with a hate crime for attacking a woman who was wearing the hijab.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Amal Abusumayah was in the checkout at the grocery store when she felt a "sharp tug" on her headscarf. When Abusumayah turned around, she recognized the woman as the same one who was making derogatory comments about Islam moments before.
The assailant, Valerie Kenney, 54, faces a possible jail sentence of three years and a $25,000 fine. More recently, there has been significant criticsim that while this is an awful and stupid crime, it's not worthy of a prison sentence, nor a fine of $25,000.So the Question of the Day is this: Is the maximum sentence an appropriate one? Or is it excessive? What would be a fitting punishment for this crime?
